The Sector Based Scheme SBS allows people from 18-30 from outside the European Economic Area (EU) to come to the United Kingdom to take temporary work.
   
A UK employer must apply for a work permit for you before you can travel to the United Kingdom and start work in the UK. The kind of work that is allowed to under the Sector Based Scheme SBS requires little or no skills.

FOOD PROCESSING (meat, fish and mushroom processing).

Below are the only types of jobs under which the Sector Based Scheme (SBS) allows non-EEA (EU) citizens to work in the UK.

The types of work in FISH PROCESSING are:

  • Animal gut removers
  • Fish filleters (preparing and cleaning fish)
  • Fish packers (packing and labelling fish)
  • Fish Process Operatives (operating, watching over, and cleaning machines that prepare fish)

 
Work available in MEAT PROCESSING is as:
  • Animal slaughter persons
  • Bone breakers
  • Bone extractors
  • Cold storage operatives
  • Lairagemen (pre-slaughter animal welfare attendant)
  • Meat cutters
  • Meat packers
  • Meat process operatives

Applying for a job under the Sector Based Scheme SBS

You cannot apply for work under the Sector Based Scheme SBS if you are already in the UK. Your application for work MUST be from outside the UK. This rule is very strict with no exceptions allowed.

You must first approach an employer in the UK who is advertising in your country for labour. If you are offered a job under the Sector Based Scheme, your employer will apply for a work permit for you.

When you receive your work permit, you must contact the nearest British authority to you that grants UK visa's and obtain entry clearance or a visa. You must do this before you travel to the UK to work under the Sector Based Scheme.

Note: If you are a citizen of Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Cyprus, Poland or Slovenia, you will not need a visa or entry clearance to work in England under the Sector Based Scheme. All you will have to to do is to show your passport to an immigration officer when you arrive to start work in the UK and tell him or her that you intend to take one of the jobs allowed under the sector based scheme.

How long can I stay in the UK under the Sector Based Scheme?

Y ou can work in the UK the Sector Based Scheme SBS for up to one year. You will have to leave the UK after 12 months, however, you can apply to return to work in the UK under the Sector Based Scheme SBS after you have been outside the UK for at least two months.

You can apply to stay longer than your work permit permits under the scheme if there is work for you in the UK which qualifies under the Sector Based Scheme SBS for up to twelve months longer.

Your employer will need to apply for another work permit for you, and you will need to make an application to the Home Office for them to grant you the permission to stay longer.

Can I change the employer I work for while I am in the UK?

Yes. You can change jobs and work for another employer during the period that the Work Permit granted to you under the Sector Based Scheme allows, but the new job must be the same kind of work that you have been doing and the new employer must make an application for a new work permit for you before you can start the new job. You can still only stay in the UK for up to one year and if you leave your job and cannot find another job immediately, you must leave the UK.

Can I change my work permit granted under Sector Based Scheme to a FULL work permit?

A UK employer outside the Sector Based Scheme can apply for a work permit for you while you are in the UK.


Can I make an application to stay in the UK permanently?

NO. The Sector Based Scheme SBS does not allow people to make an application to stay in the UK permanently.


Can I bring my family with me under Sector Based Scheme SBS?


No. Since the scheme only allows you to stay in the UK for a year (and if granted an extension  - for up to two years), you cannot bring any family members with you under the Sector Based Scheme.
